Cranio Sacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle form of bodywork which evaluates and improves the activity of the cranio sacral system. Anatomically, this system includes the brain and cord, surrounding fluids and their membranes, the bones of the cranium and spine, and the nerves emanating from them. Physiologically, the cranio sacral system is a whole body of intricate pathways of nervous tissues and their hormones.
The cranio sacral system has its own rythmic fluctuations regulating the flow of Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF) from the sacrum to the cranium. We call it ‘cranial rythm’ has an effect and influences the joints, sutures, organs, glands, blood circulation, respiration, and indeed every cell of the body.
The cranio sacral system is the governing system of the body and is sensitive to mento-emotional, chemical and physical changes in the body.
How does it work?
Cranio Sacral Practitioners are trained in the science and art of deep palpation-a fine sense of touch that allows us to explore the qualities of the tide as it flows through tissues and organs. The practitioner understands the ways in which traumatic experiences become embodied, and holds the client in a way which reflects back in the body the dysfunctional patterns held within it. In this way, restrictions to healthy function and growth can be accessed and released- no matter whether the original trauma was physical, chemical or mento-emotional.
Fundamental to cranial work is acknowledging the body’s innate intelligence and inclination to move towards balance and wellbeing. Cranial work is not a quick fix! Manipulation or strong force is not used. Its gentle way of holding creates a sense of freedom, safety and containment to encourage the client’s healing priorities to emerge.
How can CST help in the treatment of common childhood conditions?
CST is a non invasive, hands on form of bodywork and can effectively treat many conditions at all ages without any adverse side effects.CST supports the body to unblock physical and emotional blockages. CST provides a pathway for healing. The practitioner places their hands gently on the child’s body (fully clothed) identifying the area of restriction and seeks to restore balance to the CSS . As well as proper functioning of the body. Treatment can be given while the baby is asleep or awake by holding the baby. CST helps with ear infection (ottitus media) to encourage proper drainage of accumulated fluids in the middle ear. Treatment of CST will clear obstructions and ensure free drainage of fluids. Successful treatment relieves symptoms and reduces the need for anti- biotics and inserting of grommets. In the case of colic, holding of the cranial base is necessary, as the vagus nerve passes through the cranium and supply’s the digestive system. Response to CST is fairly rapid, providing treatment is started early enough.
What does Cranial Sacral Therapy Involve
Cranio Sacral Therapy is a therapy most often practiced with the client lying down, fully clothed, in a quiet and peaceful environment. With babies and small children the therapist will often work on a floor mat or while the child is gently held in the lap of a parent or caregiver.
Sometimes treatment is experienced as profound relaxation affecting the whole person, physically, mentally and emotionally It is often accompanied by a feeling of lightness and ease. At other times treatment will evoke turbulence and emotion, as deeply held traumatic patterns are accessed and released.
How can it benefit me?
Cranio Sacral Therapy works on multiple levels, influencing virtually any of the body/mind’s structures and functions. Treatment is suitable for all ages, but especially beneficial for babies and children who are just beginning to establish patterns which will set the stage for their future health and sense of self. Cranial work is well-known in the treatment of birth trauma – the effects of which may range from colic, poor growth & crania-facial bone abnormalities to learning difficulties, hypo- or hyperactivity, ear-nose-throat infections, epilepsy, autistic syndrome and cerebral palsy. Cranio Sacral Therapy is also recognised as effective in aiding the restoration of health after surgery, accidents and immune system suppression.
Cranio Sacral Practitioners do not ‘diagnose’ or ‘cure’, but rather take a process or dynamical view of illness and healthy balanced living. Nonetheless, people approach us for assistance in resolving a wide variety of ‘syndromes, disorders and diseases.
